The new Subaru Outback has a Wilderness Edition that adds off-road goods like a higher clearance, knobbier tires, and a skid plate. It’s still a Subaru with the legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, but now it has more. And at a reasonable price. Pretty great stuff!
The 2 Series hasn’t changed in a few years, but the M2 from BMW’s performance arm is beauty as-is. This is a fierce little car with a bi-turbo inline six and (highly recommended) add-on ceramic brakes. Check it out.
Station wagons, even in the storied and oft-loved luxury market, are disappearing. It’s a sad state of affairs, but a few automakers are holding the line and producing well-done vehicles in the space. When the A6 was redone, the Allroad wagon version came soon after. It debuted last year.
The XC90 three-row SUV is Volvo’s biggest vehicle. It seats seven, has a lot of cargo space, and comes in various iterations to match lifestyle wants. The T5 has a turbocharged four-cylinder and the T6 supercharged four. The T8 gets renamed the Recharge and has a plug-in hybrid setup.
The new generation BMW 3 Series appeared about two years ago, but was noticeably without any electrified options. Bimmer has fixed that this year by adding the 330e, which combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with an electric motor for a total combined output of 288 horsepower. For those counting, that’s 30 more than the 330i model has.
A few changes in the 2021 model year for the Volkswagen Tiguan keep it updated for today’s market. The Tiguan saw a full remodel in 2018, improving its interior space, cargo room, and overall demeanor. This year, it gets a larger infotainment screen option and some content updates at lower trim levels. All while keeping its third row and turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Subaru has unveiled the fifth generation of the rally-born WRX. With the new redesign comes more power, a performance-oriented transmission, and more technology. And for those wondering, no, they have not nixed the manual transmission.
Not much has really changed on the 2021 Nissan Titan compared to the 2020 model, but there are a few things to remember about the current rendition of the Titan: it’s simplified, it’s got the best warranty in the business, and it’s very good looking.
The previous generation Toyota Venza, a wagon-like crossover that was not exactly well received, was discontinued in 2015. But for the car buying public, six years is long enough to forget the past and see a new model with fresh eyes. Or so Toyota hopes. The 2021 Venza has some similarities with its previous-gen sibling, but it improves on many of the things that the older model fell short with. For starters, the 2021 Toyota Venza comes standard as a hybrid and with all-wheel drive. This means it’s an efficient all-weather option. Compared to the previous version, the new Venza is also more SUV-like and less wagon-ish, though it does still clearly aim for the Subaru Outback as its primary competitor.
When Ford announced the new Bronco models, the focus was largely on the big SUV variants of the rig, made to compete directly with Jeep’s Wrangler series. The Bronco Sport, though largely overlooked, is a solid off-roader, winning the X-class of the Rebelle Rally last year despite being discounted as the “Baby Bronco” model.
The Honda Accord Hybrid is a hybrid version of the Accord. And that’s a good thing. The Honda Accord is a top-selling sedan and for good reason. It’s a car most can appreciate for its economics, reputation for reliability, and meritorious drive appeal. The Hybrid keeps those things and adds high fuel efficiency to the list.
The Nissan Armada is the largest sport utility in Nissan’s lineup. It has heritage from the legendary Nissan Patrol and shares a lot of capability and underpinnings with the luxurious Infiniti QX80 that competed in the 2020 Rebelle Rally. In short, the 2021 Armada isn’t just another pretty SUV. It’s got chops.
When we drove the Polaris Slingshot last year, we noted a few things that we thought could use some improvement. Well, Polaris must have listened, as the new 2021 model has a lot of updates that make it one of the funnest vehicles we’ve driven.
Just about every year, the Rocky Mountain Automotive Press (RMAP) holds a driving event in which journalists from the region can experience vehicles from various manufacturers in the beauty of the Rocky Mountains during the summertime. This year, the event was held in August of 2021 and took place in the mountain town of Morrison, Colorado. Several vehicles were available for us to drive.
After the unveiling of the new and much-anticipated Z from Nissan, we got the chance to spend some personal time with the car at Z Con in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where the new Z was unveiled in person to hundreds of fans from around the world.
In this review, Aaron looks at the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee L. This is the next-generation for the Grand Cherokee and it’s well done. There are some complaints, however, and a few things that could improve. For the most part, though, Jeep hit the nail pretty square. And off-road? This is an awesome setup for a family rig.
The Honda CR-V has long enjoyed the top sales position in compact crossovers. The CR-V was one of the founders of its segment and has usually been the benchmark for the market since. Compact crossovers are noted for their small size, versatility, and accommodating interiors. And while the CR-V has remained a best seller for years, it’s also faced stiff competition from other compacts that are worth considering.
The 2021 Ford Bronco is an off-road-focused sport utility competing directly with the Jeep Wrangler with impressive all-terrain specs and retro styling. Harking back to the 1970s and 1980s when the Ford Bronco reigned as truck-SUV legend, the new 2021 model marks the fifth generation for the Bronco and a return of the nameplate after a 25 year hiatus.
The Genesis luxury brand is a young upstart, but is part of the well-respected Hyundai group with all the backing that implies. The brand itself began in 2015 and the G70 entered the market as its first small luxury car in 2018. Since then, the G70 has undergone a few changes, but this year marks its first major overhaul. The 2022 G70 features a changed look, including a new grille, new rear lighting, and a lot of changes to the dashboard and infotainment. And although the G70 no longer has a manual transmission option (which didn’t sell well), it’s still the sporty and fun to drive sedan it was from the get-go.
The current-generation Honda Accord Hybrid appeared in 2018 and has undergone a few updates since then to stay tech-relevant. The most striking thing about the Accord Hybrid is that it’s an Accord, but with a more efficient gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. There are zero compromises made to the excellent Accord sedan in order to create the Accord Hybrid. That’s likely the greatest selling point that could be made for this Honda. And it’s a good one.
The Sonata debuted last year as an all-new version of itself and instantly got a lot of attention for its bold new look and proliferate technology. The Sonata is a solid sedan competing in a shrinking market of excellent options. The looks will grow on you.
The Lexus LX is, at this point, quite aged, having been introduced in 2008. This year, however, the LX 570 gets a bit of a facelift, some added technology, and a new LX Inspiration limited edition model. The LX 570 is based on the Toyota Land Cruiser, which explains its extreme off-road capabilities and strong engineering. This SUV is the flagship of the Lexus lineup and as such it carries most of the hallmarks that make the brand what it is.
The new Carnival will replace the Sedona as Kia’s minivan. But this is much more than a minivan. The 2022 Kia Carnival has best-in-class cargo space, a fast-paced feel about its drive, huge amounts of interior room, and a great price tag. This sets a new bar for the minivan segment. And probably for the three-row crossover segment as well.
Acura completely redesigned the MDX sport utility for the 2022 model year. It’s new look is an evolution of the previous generation, having some harder edges and simpler design language overall. Inside, everything is changed, including the dual infotainment screens. Some of these changes are for the better.
The 2021 Nissan Titan Pro-4X is a basic truck with a few upticks that might be a surprise. Like its way better than average warranty. And the fact that it’s simple to spec out and buy. Among other things. Here’s the deets.
Fully redesigned in 2019, the Nissan Altima remains a mainstay in the mid-size family sedan market. The Altima ticks most every box for the sedan buyer and sees a little content shuffling this year to better appeal to those buyers. There is a price reduction for the lower end SV trim, the turbocharged engine moves exclusively to the SR trim, and most trims now have access to all-wheel drive and ProPilot Assist features.
Toyota has developed a new platform for battery electric vehicles, that it’s calling Beyond Zero. Vehicles using this modular BEV platform can be sized as needed to fit various needs. The first of those vehicles will be the bZ4X, a small SUV to launch in mid-2022.
The 2021 Grand Cherokee L ushers in a new generation version of the Grand Cherokee and heralds a new lineup with that name. Like a trainee co-pilot bringing in a jetliner, the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee L is a little bumpy on the approach and makes a couple of side hops in what is otherwise a perfect landing.
When the eighth-generation Corvette debuted as a mid-engined supercar-like design, it got a lot of attention. Our test drive proved the hype to be warranted. Now, Chevy has an all-new "American supercar" version of the ‘Vette in its storied Z06 track-tuned edition.
The Civic is now in its eleventh generation with this all-new design for 2022. Its long run as the compact car of choice will likely continue thanks to a more contemporary look, huge interior, and available turbocharged powerhouse. Here’s our quick take.
The Acura TLX is a luxury sports sedan that has endured a love-hate relationship in the luxury market. But Acura completely redesigned the TLX for 2021, with a better interior, more tech, and optional all-wheel drive tuned for better handling. Are these changes enough to draw new customers in from other luxury brands? While it’s too soon to tell, the 2021 model is a big step forward for the car, and it really should be considered for anyone shopping this segment.
Toyota announced the return of the storied Supra sports car with a lot of fanfare, and when the new Supra debuted, the performance for the price was phenomenally good. And although the fifth-generation Supra is not, in fact, a Toyota, it hits a rare spot of excellence which transcends that detail.
The big X5 SUV comes in four basic flavors. The two V8-powered M models get most of the attention, but for normal people who don’t dream of track time in their sport utilities, there are two X5s to choose from. The base turbo-six (sDrive40i and xDrive40i) is a good choice for those budgeting their BMW purchase with other family considerations. The xDrive45e plug-in hybrid, though, is where the eyes should be turning. The 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e (better known as the X5 Hybrid) combines the turbocharged six-cylinder found on the base model with an electric motor and a 24 kWh battery for a little more horsepower and about 40 miles of efficient, all-electric driving. For our money, that model is where it’s at.
The Blazer’s return to market in 2019 was a surprise to some and an instant hit with others. A few bemoaned the change from the truck-based off-road SUV they remembered from the 1990s to the car-based crossover design it is now. But Chevrolet knew what the market wanted and the new Blazer has done well for itself as a result. The 2021 Blazer gets a few more safety features added on, but otherwise doesn’t change from its 2019 debut model. It handles well, gets good fuel economy, and has a lot of standard features. It’s also cramped in the back seat, short on cargo space, and a little stiffer in ride quality than some of the competition. There are tradeoffs for all that sporty styling, after all.
With the world shifting to electric vehicles, figuring out the best way to get a car charger for an electric vehicle installed is going to become common challenge for many of us. Here's a look at what’s involved, and what factors to consider, when it comes to installing an EV charger in your home.
Jeep has unveiled the all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup. The fifth generation adds a plug-in hybrid 4xe variant and a Trailhawk off-road edition. Aiming for a premium SUV market, the Grand Cherokee will hit showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2021.
The Mazda CX-9 debuted in 2007 to mixed reviews. Mazda listened to the critics, however, and continually improved the three-row crossover until it became one of the highest-rated options on the market. The current-generation CX-9 is a real looker, has a wonderfully ergonomic interior, and an engaging road presence. Mazda clearly aimed to be the best at everything and, as a result, the CX-9 has become a well-rounded competitor. For the 2021 model year, the CX-9 gets a few upgrades, including a new infotainment system.
Our particular truck was the 2021 Toyota Tacoma SR5 with its new Trail Special Edition (“Trail”) sub-trim added on. The Trail upgrade can only happen on a Tacoma SR5 with the V6 engine upgrade and in the Double Cab model. Sorry crew cab buyers, you’ll have to get the TRD Sport instead. The price difference is close, though, at just about $1,000 between them; in favor of the SR5.
When the term “driver’s car” is uttered, it nearly always refers to something like the Mazda Miata. The little Mazda MX-5, whose current rendition arrived in 2016, carries the mantle of the beloved Miata name. Unlike many enthusiast cars, the Mazda Miata is multi-generational, which has allowed it to withstand the usual loss of interest that other enthusiast rides have suffered from. The Mazda Miata’s primary focus is on drive dynamics. It’s fun, a bit quirky, and still very much the flagship of Mazda’s “Zoom Zoom” mantra. This year, the 2021 MX-5 Miata gets wireless Apple CarPlay integration and a white leather upholstery option.
Although often panned as “not a truck,” the Honda Ridgeline has flagshipped a segment of small car-based pickups in America. The Ridgeline has a bigger interior, more daily drive usefulness, and better fuel economy than most of the traditional pickup trucks in the mid-sized segment. The 2021 Honda Ridgeline gets a styling refresh to give it a more rugged appeal and gains all-wheel drive as standard equipment. Infotainment also gets an upgrade. Based heavily on the Honda Pilot SUV, the Ridgeline resonates with buyers for many reasons.
Nissan has unveiled a high-performance conceptual electric vehicle called the Ariya Single Seater Concept at the Nissan Futures event in Japan. The project demonstrates how an all-electric road car powertrain could be used in a custom-built racing car chassis.
The Carnival is a new model in Kia’s lineup, replacing the Sedona minivan as the people-mover of choice from the Korean automaker. It's styled more like an SUV, offering plenty of interior space. We got ahold of one, and spent a week with it as a daily family-hauler.
When BMW redesigned the X5 in 2019 it became larger and more accommodating while retaining its driver-centric nature and smart interior, but the hybrid model went missing from the lineup. This year sees the return of the plug-in hybrid, along with some efficiency upgrades ... and losses.
When Jeep announced an electric Wrangler, and the 4xe (“four-by-E”) brand, heads definitely turned. The benefits of electric motors off the pavement are easily understood by off-road enthusiasts, but are they apparent when combined with the legendary prowess of the Jeep Wrangler?
Since its debut in 2016, the Mazda CX-9 has been the midsized three-row that defined style in the segment. Stepping away from the utilitarian focus of most of its competitors, the CX-9 aims for looks and drive dynamics instead. But does so without becoming useless otherwise. Despite its looks, the Mazda CX-9 is a good daily driver and a useful people mover.

The 2021 VW ID.4 is physically smaller than the Tiguan SUV, but has about the same interior room. It’s powered just right, with both two-wheel and all-wheel drive options, and has enough range to be realistically useful for nearly everyone. While it does have a few of the downers most electric vehicles currently share, this ground-up EV is aimed at the correct audience and hits a flourishing new market at just the right time.
The Specialty Equipment Market Association show (SEMA) happens every year, and usually features some seriously customized vehicles. Mopar’s offerings this year include a nose-thumb at Tesla, a customized plug-in Jeep, and a scary apex predator truck.
The Nissan Leaf entered the market in 2011 as the first truly mass-produced electric vehicle since the early part of the 20th century. Today, Nissan has taken the original sub-100-mile-range EV and put it into the post-200-mile genre. Still the lowest-cost production EV on the market, the second-generation Leaf’s base price has actually been lowered for 2022.
