In this book photo layouts, old advertisements, and commentary from those who were working on the trucks in question are all gathered together to reside with Jimmy and James’ historical explanation and commentary on the trucks of each of the F-Series. Specifically focusing on the half-ton F-100/150 models, but with discussion including the heavy-duty models in the range as well. This includes engine and transmission options, cab and body changes, and bed length and bed wall designs.
When the Ford Maverick debuted, it was an instant hit amongst those looking for a compact pickup truck with no frills. Sales have been excellent, with backorders being the norm for this little truck.
BMW has unveiled a beautiful one-off concept two-seat shooting brake at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este 2023. The Concept Touring Coupe is a combination of a sports car and a station wagon – creating what might be considered a classic shooting brake design – yet this concept is uniquely eye-catching for its proportions.
Automotive Writer Aaron Turpen writes: “Toyota used its expertise in hybrid electric systems to add more power to its pickup. Basically, Toyota took some Prius stuff and shoved it into the Tundra and then went all Tim Allen on it. Arr augh aurgh!”
Toyota pulled the cloth off an all-new Tacoma mid-sized pickup truck in Hawaii. The latest rendition of the truck follows its larger siblings, the Tundra and the Sequoia, built on the automaker’s new TNGA-F truck platform.
Mercedes-Benz has debuted a new three-row SUV as part of the EQ lineup. This all-electric sport utility fits above the EQB and is styled and sized similar to the EQS car. Like the car, the EQS SUV features a luxurious interior, solid range estimates, and lots of technology. Plus it adds a usable third row of seating.
BMW updated the styling for the 3 Series for the 2023 model year, carrying forward with the seventh generation of the 3, which entered the market in 2019. The updates, happily, didn’t include a widening of the beaver tooth or a nerfing of the M model.
Built from scratch, the new Polaris Xpedition is a large two- or four-door side-by-side-style off-road vehicle that features more interior room for riders and more storage and accessory options for getting out into the wilds. Polaris unveiled the vehicle at a virtual event where we asked questions about the rig and gained insight into the company’s plans for this new AV (adventure vehicle).
The A290, whose production prototype is being called the A290_β ("A290 Beta"), is the first of three "Dream Garage" vehicles coming from Alpine. The all-electric sports car design fits (fittingly) in the B-segment.
Ford is making 1,966 models of the 2023 Bronco Sport in its Heritage editions. The 1966 number refers to the year the Bronco was introduced. The throwback trim levels for the Bronco Sport include steelie-appearing wheels, retro paint jobs, and nostalgic interior touches.
Only once in a great while does a rookie year prove to be a blockbuster. In sports, “Night Train” Lane in 1952 and Larry Bird in 1979 were two such rookies. In automotive, Tesla and Genesis are recent rookies that hit big. Now Genesis has produced its first electric vehicle, the 2023 GV60.
When Ford debuted the new Bronco in its full-sized format, it was very clearly aimed towards Jeep and its iconic Wrangler. The Jeep, having few (if any) real competitors for years, is now faced with serious competition in the form of two Bronco models – the Everglades and the Raptor.
It’s been two years since the Bronco Sport entered the market. Though still confused with the full-sized Bronco, the Bronco Sport has earned a place in the compact crossover segment as a popular contender. The 2023 Ford Bronco Sport sees new color options, a few changes to optional equipment packages, and gets a new Black Diamond Off-Road package. The Heritage and Heritage Limited editions are special options of which Ford will only be making 1,966 units. The number 1966 being the year the Bronco was first introduced.
Every year, the Rocky Mountain Automotive Press (RMAP) puts on an event in Colorado called the Rocky Mountain Driving Experience (RMDE). This year, the event had a dozen cars and about two dozen journalists in attendance. We drove from Golden, Colorado, just outside of Denver, and up into the mountains towards Nederlands, Colorado. For two days, we experienced several vehicles and talked with manufacturer representatives about them. Here’s what I experienced this year.
The annual SuperRigs show, which has truck drivers from around North America showing up to compete, was held in Gillette, Wyoming this year. The show featured about thirty big rigs coming from all over the U.S. and Canada, competing to win prizes for their rigs.
The VW Taos is Volkswagen’s small to compact SUV. It replaces what the Tiguan used to be, fitting in that niche of buyer who wants a slightly sporty, practical, and efficient little two-row option. The Taos has a large cargo space and good dynamics.
The Ford Maverick hit the market in 2022 and has proven to be very popular. We reviewed the hybrid upon the Maverick’s debut and our assessment of that model still stands. For the 2023 model year, Ford has added a Tremor off-road package to the Maverick. So we tried it. And it’s ... okay.
Wakesurfing is nothing new. Ever since boats became capable of pulling someone behind them, the idea of jumping and playing on the waves created by the boat has been a thing. Today, however, technology has improved this activity immensely – thanks largely to companies like MasterCraft.
Honda has announced a new addition to its side-by-side UTV lineup. The new Talon 1000R-4 Fox Live Valve is wider and longer than the standard four-seat 1000R-4 to add more off-road capability in rough terrain.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE is a popular SUV thanks to its good looks and high amount of luxury for the price paid. For 2024, Mercedes changed a few things for the GLE including big interior updates, an upgrade to its infotainment system, and styling changes to the front and rear plastics. The biggest change, though, is the addition of a plug-in hybrid model, the 450e.
The third generation of the Nissan Frontier pickup truck debuted last year. We were happy to see that it remained a “trucky truck,” keeping to its core values of being useful and very much a pickup. For 2023, a couple of changes are made, but nothing that interferes with that.
The CX-5 is Mazda’s most popular vehicle and is one of the best sellers in the small crossover segment. It hasn’t seen significant change since 2017, but that hasn’t stopped it from being a winner in many popularity contests. Including the one that matters most: the consumer market. The 2023 Mazda CX-5 has a lot going for it. Like most Mazda vehicles, it’s an engaging drive with just the right amount of feedback to keep the driver interested. It looks good and has a very well-done interior. And it’s comfortable and quiet on the road.
Columnist Aaron Turpen writes, "Call these conversation starters or random 'know stuff' factoids, but there are some fascinating things to know about cars. If you’re a car nerd like I am, you definitely love spouting weird facts whenever it can be worked into everyday conversation."
Polaris has redesigned the RZR XP side-by-side. Designed for more rugged off-road use, the 2024 RZR XP 1000 sports a new chassis, engine and styling. We went to Tennessee during the state’s rainy season, and got mud all over ourselves and this new rig.

This year, it sees a handful of small upgrades. These include an upgraded touchscreen, the next-generation Toyota Safety Sense system, and wireless connections for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Also new this year is this new hybrid model.

Back in the 1930s, Hudson Motor Company was a powerful automotive concern known for its well-done and classy cars. Hudson also had its hands in commercial vehicles under other brand names, building trucks and machines for industry. Its success in the consumer market, however, was its greatest strength with vehicles like the Hudson Commodore setting the bar. In 1939, the company would make a decision that would change the industry forever. It hired Betty Thatcher, a new designer from the Cleveland School of Arts. Oros became the first female automotive designer in America. And she did so on her own merit, before World War II would change the workforce forever.
I went to Gillette, Wyoming to see some big rigs. That was cool, but I also stopped in the Frontier Auto Museum downtown. My text conversation with a friend after I walked in and paid the nominal entrance fee summed it up. “Dude, I’m in the coolest car museum I’ve been to in years. Seriously.” “How’s your blood pressure?” “I can’t feel my toes right now. I had to tie a bandanna around my head to hold my mouth shut. I keep yelling ‘HOLY SH*T’ every time I see something.”
If there’s one thing Elon Musk loves doing more than anything else, it’s trolling people. He literally bought his favorite trolling platform on social media. Much of what we see of Musk and his companies are jokes and trolls. But internally, this joking aside, Musk’s visions and reality aren’t always compatible, especially with his biggest troll yet: The Tesla Cybertruck.
The Honda CR-V is the company’s best-selling vehicle and the hybrid model has quickly gained popularity for its added efficiency. The 2023 Honda CR-V is all-new, becoming the sixth generation of the crossover-SUV. The CR-V Hybrid model is now, however, no longer considered a separate model from the CR-V, but is instead merely the top trim levels’ automatic upgrade. For clarity in this review, since we did drive the hybrid, we will use CR-V Hybrid to separate this one from its gas-only trim mates.
The Toyota Sequoia enters its third generation with the 2023 model year, boasting an all-new design. A hybrid powertrain is now standard and the thirsty V8 it used previously is now gone. A few quirks common to full-sized Toyota SUVs still remain, but the Sequoia is now much improved.
The big three-row market of luxury SUV offerings are now a six-digit market. Some might have a starting price under $100,000, but most are selling at or above that. Most luxury buyers don’t do base models. Those who do are buying the nameplate, not the vehicle itself. The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is, like most luxury models, a lot of letters and numbers that mean little to the average person on the street. Gone are the glory days when longer names with more syllables and added suffixes directly correlated with the car’s cost. Instead, we just get a lot of semi-random capital letters followed by nonsensical numbers that may or may not have something to do with the engine, or whatever.
While perusing a small, local car show recently, I saw something I’d never before seen in person: an AMC Rebel “The Machine.” This now-iconic muscle car was a product of the height of the muscle car era and not very many of them were made, with even fewer remaining today in original condition. The Machine is one of the most interesting and oft-forgotten cars from that time period.
While electric vehicle sales are growing in the United States at a healthy pace, they are starting to hit a brick wall that many EV makers and pundits may not have anticipated: consumer expectations.

Now the British automaker has unveiled a four-cylinder version, which it says is the most powerful 4-cylinder car it's ever produced. The Emira is a mid-engined two-seat sports car that currently fronts Lotus' lineage of similarly-themed vehicles. Small, light, and low-displacement are Lotus trademarks and they are especially true with the Emira.
Tesla’s NACS charging connector for electric vehicle charging has been on a tear as of late. Several manufacturers, including Ford, General Motors, Rivian, and Volvo, have announced that they’ll be switching to Tesla’s charging standard soon. Some national EV charging companies have also announced a switch. These mass adoptions are a testament to the good design of the NACS plug as well as the veracity of the Tesla Supercharger Network itself–still the largest and most accessible network nationally.
A new study from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) estimates that the United States will need about 28 million charging stations by 2030. This is to accommodate an expected 30-42 million light-duty electric vehicles.
The Toyota Corolla Cross was introduced for the 2022 model year as an alternative to the standard Corolla sedan. And to some of Toyota’s competitor’s options as well. As a wagon-style crossover, the Corolla Cross has only a few things in common with its sedan sibling, but it’s managed to be a perfect entry-level option for buyers in the small crossover market. For 2023, Toyota made mostly minor changes to the Corolla Cross. The touchscreen is a nicer unit now and adds wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Toyota’s latest Safety Sense 3.0 system is now added to the SUV as well.
With a slogan like “The Future is Ecclectic,” we’d expect some interesting things from INNengine, a startup based in Spain. The company is showcasing a “one-stroke” engine that works as an opposed piston with a wavy twist.

The Volkswagen ID.4 is a good entry into the more affordable, middle-sized electric vehicle segment. Our summary assessment is that it’s not the touchdown-getting star on the field, but more like the always reliable field goal punter who hits between the posts every time.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed new fuel economy standards for passenger cars, light trucks, and heavy-duty pickup trucks for model years 2027-2031. The new efficiency standards would require a two percent per year upgrade for passenger cars, four percent per year for light trucks (which includes sport utilities), and 10 percent per year for heavy-duty trucks. The rates for passenger cars and light trucks would compound at the same rates based on the previous year’s standard starting in 2032.
