The 2020 Infiniti QX80 continues the current generation of the big luxury SUV, which is now entering its tenth year. That makes it pretty old in automotive terms, but Infiniti added a few things to update it this year. Namely a new infotainment system, Apple Carplay and Android Auto as standard, and a special Edition 30 package to celebrate 30 years of Infiniti in the U.S. Does this stuff help keep the big QX80 relevant? That depends on what you think of as current in full-sized luxury SUVs. Compared to others, the QX80 is a bit dated in many ways, but those are fine points rather than big issues that seriously degrade the rig’s value. Not many in this segment can claim an 8,500 pound towing capacity, standard features that include leather upholstery and a 360-degree parking camera, or TWO touchscreens for infotainment.

I recently took a road trip in an electric car. Driving from Seattle, WA to Portland, OR along the northwestern coast, I learned what it’s like to drive long distances in an electric vehicle. The Altima has two engine options and transmission choice. Drivetrain can be either front-wheel or all-wheel drive, depending on model and engine choices made.

Traditionally a crossover-SUV is as much car as it is sport utility. Some vehicles, like the Soul, buck that trend, using the best bits of crossover design (namely interior roominess and a higher ride height) with a mostly car-based focus. This has struck a chord with many buyers, especially those interested in a traditional sedan or hatchback, but who want more room without going to a full-blown SUV. The Soul has defined and dominated that automotive demographic since its introduction. While others have come and gone, only the Kia Soul has remained a best-seller. The Kia Soul has been totally redesigned for the 2020 model year with a lot of good updates, including a slightly larger footprint and more interior space. New powertrain options, some restyling, and a lot of added features are high points of this third-generation Soul. The 2020 Kia Soul is a five-passenger hatchback. Available in six trim models, it has two engine options (depending on trim chosen) and either a six-speed manual, continuously variable transmission (CVT), or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Redesigned for 2020, the BMW X6 fits in the German automaker’s "sports activity vehicle" (SAV) range. Its wagon-like mixture of styling on a crossover-SUV body make it unique. As the third-generation for the X6, the 2020 model gets several good upgrades.

This is a well-vetted engine made by Fiat in Canada. It’s also the diesel likely to arrive for the Jeep Gladiator in the next year.

The X7 is BMW’s big, three-row sport utility and has been the largest offering from the company in terms of family haulers. Often forgotten as the less exciting of the Bimmers, the X7 gets a muscular upgrade in the 2020 M50i model. After a week, we developed a love-hate relationship with it.

We recently spent some time with the 2020 Infiniti QX50, a well-sized luxury crossover with sporty looks and plenty of goodness to justify itself. It looks great, has an excellent interior, and comes packed with loads of standard features right out of the box. New for this year is a dual-screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Several advanced safety features are now standard as well. Introduced last year, the new QX50 improved greatly on the crossover by beefing up its profile to add more interior space. The previous-generation QX50 was a sporty, fun driving crossover, but it lacked the daily use ergonomics of most of its competition thanks to a low profile and its resulting compact rear seating. In short, the old QX50 was more like a Q50 sedan with a higher stance than it was a crossover.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC has several qualities that make it appealing – sometimes in a contradictory way. It’s a large compact luxury SUV that can tow a trailer and whose AMG 63 model comes with a supercharged V8. All things that greatly appeal to American buyers.

Toyota has revamped its Sienna minivan with an all-new 2021 model that comes standard with a hybrid powertrain delivering 33 mpg combined. The 2021 Sienna will retain its all-wheel drive option, makes safety a priority, and includes a new high-level luxury option.

Toyota has announced the return of the Venza wagon-style crossover SUV as an upscale two-row offering. A hybrid powertrain will be standard in the new Venza, which will arrive in the 2021 model year. Also standard will be hybrid-powered all-wheel drive.

When Ram Truck redesigned the half-ton 1500 models for 2019, it brought back the EcoDiesel engine as well. The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel is similar to what it was before, but this third generation for the engine has more power, a quieter run, and a better transmission match.

The Subaru Ascent debuted in the 2019 model year as a new three-row option for Subaru fans. The Ascent picks up where the discontinued Tribeca left off several years ago, giving Subaru buyers an option for growing families. The 2020 Ascent features a usable third row, good fuel economy, high safety ratings, and Subaru's signature all-wheel drive. The Ascent is built on the new platform Subaru developed for most of its offerings, including the Outback and Impreza. The 2020 Subaru Ascent has seating for up to eight and adds a rear-seat reminder as standard this year, boosting safety. Power-folding side mirrors are also an option for 2020. The 2020 Ascent is otherwise unchanged from its 2019 debut model.

Some might be surprised to learn how active the minivan market is. The 2020 Toyota Sienna competes in this segment against heavy rivals, though the field is much smaller now than it was in the past. Minivans are known for roomy interiors, family-friendly designs, and daily use ergonomics. The 2020 Sienna hits all of those points. The Sienna is, at this point, becoming fairly long in the tooth. Redesigned in 2011, the Toyota minivan hasn't seen a major upgrade since. That doesn't mean it's outdated, however, but it does have some design and technology elements that seem yesteryear compared to the other options available now.

The Cherokee is a two-row, small midsized crossover that offers legendary Jeep capability alongside daily use, on-road comfort and stability. Fully redesigned for the 2019 model year, the 2020 Jeep Cherokee remains largely unchanged from last year. The new changes included a new look, another engine option, and upgrades to daily usability. The 2020 Cherokee sits in the Jeep lineup in between the larger Grand Cherokee and the smaller Compass. The Cherokee often enjoys a podium spot as the best selling Jeep in the nameplate's stable of vehicles as it hits a popular size point in between smaller compacts and larger family-toting options.

A new generation of the Jeep Wrangler was introduced in 2018 as an all-new look at the most iconic of the Jeep models. The Unlimited model, or four-door option for the Wrangler, was included in those changes. The new Wrangler retains the classic looks and nostalgic feel of the Wrangler line, but updates with a much more sophisticated interior and a far better road feel than previous generations of the Wrangler had. The legendary off-road and adventure prowess of the model also remains. For the 2020 model year, Jeep added more updates for the Wrangler Unlimited. A new V6 mild hybrid option is available for the Sahara Unlimited and several new special-edition models are added. A new diesel engine option also debuts this year.
